Just Add Circles

The title “Just Add Circles” is my reaction to a recent online design trend that includes groupings of concentric circles as a pattern. Anyway, I played with circles inside circles, but I made it my own. Also, I drew vertical lines to break up my shapes as a positive/negative space game – if you will. I rendered the piece with graphite on Reeves BFK paper. It is a rag paper that can take a lot of abuse.

Viral Mutation

Over the last few years I have been interested in the viral phenomena online. A video will suddenly become a sensation that spawns remixes and parodies. I decided to take a shape of a virus and let it change color and spikes as it repeats across the page. The first one is green. The other ones follow a continuous rotation around a pastel color wheel.

Tweetmania

To capture the spirit of the exploding Twitter phenomenon, I repeated the shape of a bluebird soaring upward. To render my watercolor painting, I used several of the blues available including: cobalt blue, phthalo blue and ultramarine blue. After much thought, I decided to not add any other colors to this work. I figured they would be more a distraction then an improvement.

Crop Addiction

A few months ago a friend on Facebook invited me to try a game called Farm Town. In short order I was addicted to the game. Since then, I also became hooked on a very similar game, FarmVille. Anyway, here is my gouache abstract painting celebrating both games. I can’t escape grids.
